Do We Really Need a Cake Topper?

I have been getting this question from my fiance since I started talking about the cake.

My initial reaction was, "Of course!"

But as we're getting closer, I wonder...do we really?

This is the current cake inspiration photo (done by Publix!)

But probably with some color on it...somewhere.

I was thinking about doing a cake topper like this:

At only $25, it's a steal!

At first I wanted little people. My fiance hated the little people. Not to mention it was nearly impossible to find one I liked, let alone one we both liked!

So I started thinking of doing a "C". I like this idea because we could pass it on to our sons (if we have any!) for their cake toppers. But my future daughter-in-laws may not even care or want it.

Or we could turn it into a Christmas ornament. But I already thought about doing that with the ring bearer's bowl.

And then I saw this photo on Weddingbee. I love this cake. And...no cake topper!

Hmmm. Maybe my fiance has the right idea.

So what do you think...cake topper or no cake topper?

  1. i'm choosing cake topper so that we can display it in our living room or kitchen afterwards. the look of the "M" in the second photo is beautiful :)

  2. I'm picking a cake toper that we can use later as a display or as a book end. I'm just going with the last initial.

  4. I like the silver, metal letter that's on the Publix cake. That is so pretty!! I like it much better than having people up there.

  5. I think you can get away without a cake topper. Our cake topper is really rolled out fondant in the shape of a few objects.

Your inspiration cake is a beauty. I think that cake will look great with or without a cake topper. Have you thought about maybe flowers as the topper to bring in color?

  6. We chose a cake topper monogram. But were only using the letter of our last name. I'm still undecided about what I'll do with it after the wedding but I know I'll find some creative way to showcase it!

  7. I am starting to think toppers are over rated...considering how $$$ most of them are. We have our dog going up top...but it not...we were just going to use flowers

  8. We are doing a cake topper but all of the cakes that I have seen without the topper look just as great if not better sometimes! With the style cake you are going with I think the cake will look very classy and clean without the topper! Good luck!

  12. We are doing roses on the top and then cascading down one of the sides. I never really thought about a cake topper, but when I saw the cake I was inspired by, the roses seems so appropriate.

  15. I love the letter cake topper! You could also do fresh flowers as a topper as well. I had red roses on the top of mine to match my cake ;)

  17. I don't think any details, like the cake topper, are necessary - they're optional. If it's something you want, go for it. If you really don't feel strongly about it, skip it altogether, and put the money in to something you do care about.

The FFG and I may not even be doing a cake at all. We've recently realized that it's the one thing we haven't really talked about much, because we care so little. We can't remember one cake from any weddings we've been to, and our caterer offers ice cream as a part of their packages, so - why bother? We may just get a small one to cut for pictures.

I like the last cake in your post. It looks so much better in color, actually ON the cake, instead of on top in silver (where I honestly think it could kind of get a little lost).
