What's In a Name? - Guest Post by Mom!

As some of you know, my Mom is getting into this blogging thing. This is her latest post - and I thought it was totally relevant here!

What's In A Name?
My daughter is getting married in a little over three months and I find myself stressing about the strangest things.

One of the first things that came to my mind and still enters it on a regular bases is....What will my son in law call me?

This may sound strange to you but it is very important to me. A name helps identify who you are. It tells people something about you when they hear it.So what will my son in law call me?

My dad called his mother in law Mrs Benson. I thought that sounded cold especially since my mom called her mother in law Mom. I have never known what to call my mother in law so I resort to Grandma Weed. My husband calls my mom Bonnie.

So here is what I know right now..I don't want to be called Mrs. Weed and I really don't want him to call me mom. Not that I would mind but I really don't want my daughter calling his mom mom so I don't think that would be good. Dianne works but I would like to come up with a more enduring name. Something that says that I am someone special to him...not just his mother in law.

I have asked him to think about what he wants to call me but I am sure he has other things on his mind. So here are some ideas I have:

Mama D
Mama Weed
Mother in law dearest fairest of them all....just kidding

I think I'm leaning to Mama Weed...then maybe the grandkids could just call me this too. My husband could be papa Weed. This sounds friendly ..like someone you would want to go to when you need something. Like someone you would care about. I think this may be my name....It reminds me of the Bernstein Bears with Mama Bear and Papa Bear and who doesn't love that vision.

So what do you think a mother in law should be called...no wise cracks please.

What do you think? Feedback please! :)

  1. My mom tried getting my brother-in-laws to call her "Mama D" and they did it a little while cause they thought it was funny-- but now they just call her "Debra" or "Miss Debra"

  2. That is one of the most awkward things ever!! I never know what to call M's mom! I just usually say "Hey..."! Haha! I just think it's weird to call her Sandra but I know what else I can call her! I def like that's she's come up with a list! Haha

  3. The Candyman has already started calling my mom 'Momma.' His mother passed away when he was young, so this is OK. He calls my dad by his first name and will most likely continue. I call his dad by his first name too. Maybe I'll start calling him Poppa. Papa. Whatever.

  4. Definetely a sticky subject. I am not used to the cultural tradition of calling elder women "Miss" and then their first name which is prevelant in my fiance's family and community. I suspect I will continue to call her by her first name with Miss in front of it. I find myself just avoiding using a name at all with his father. :) I guess time will tell, lol

  5. I didn't call the Cowan's anything until we found out we were pregnant. Then I was able to call them Grammy and Grandpa. lol I never knew what to call them. It was just awkward to call them by their first name, Mr. or Mrs., and especially mom and dad. Nick calls my parents by their first names and that sounds weird every time for some reason. LOL

What are you going to call Grammy and Grandpa?!?!? :)

  6. I guess I don't really understand why he cant call you mom. It seems a little selfish considering your next sentence was just because your don't want your daughter to call his mother that.
